Why is the game the way it is

I’m very excited to finally be adding this feature to my site. The idea has been sitting in my mind and Discord DMs for months, but it looked like it would never get made. Once I got this blog up and running, though, I had run out of excuses.

The main premise of the game is that it’s a test of broad quizzing ability and your high-speed reactions. It could be Quarks, or Taylor Swift songs, you’ve got 5 seconds to process the question and get your first guess in. In playtesting, I’ve found this to be mildly infuriating at times, but in a way that makes the quiz more entertaining than other games. If you find it more than mildly infuriating, I apologise. The questions are hard, so don’t feel disheartened if you’re putting up single-digit scores some days.

Hopefully, if you encounter rounds you’re clueless about and score 0/5 on, you feel encouraged to look them up and learn from them. If you play the daily game regularly, I assure you that you will 0/5 a topic one day. We’ve covered a really diverse range of topics, and it would be highly abnormal to know about them all.

I’ve not included answer lists viewable to the player; such lists are easily researchable yourself if you wish to go and find out what you could have written, but I have chosen to exclude this, so if you don’t want to know, you don’t have to know. This means you can refresh and try the daily again, pushing yourself to work out those answers you got stuck on.

For this same reason, I have not enabled IP or browser recognition score saving. If I implemented this common feature, you would be forced to open a new browser to replay the daily. It’s obviously good honesty to only share your first score with your friends, but IP/browser recognition doesn’t really force that, since it’s hardly difficult to open a daily game on a new device or browser and “cheat”.

What’s the future

Since this has been put together by just a couple of people, and the question writing requires a complete written set of every plausible answer, the current question set is modest. (165 questions) This should be a good amount to allow you all to give it a proper go, but it means that if you really grind through the practice modes, you will start seeing the same questions on repeat. Our plan is to rejuvenate and update these packs in 3 weeks’ time from launch.

The other short-to-mid-term plan is that I would like to add more subject-specific modes, such as history or sports. We won’t, however, rush to put these out and will ensure the topics are done well before release.

If anyone has a real keen interest in getting involved with making/contributing to their own category, then please do email me and we’ll see if it’s feasible. The base game has a lot of potential directions it could be taken in, really specific modes like Football Only or Gaming Only or even, say, turning it into a revision tool for people learning English. I can’t sanely apply myself to creating all of these, but if there’s a group with the desire, I would be happy to collaborate.

The final point to this is that if you’re a teacher interested in using this as part of your schooling or having a set made for your subject, etc. I would love to turn this from a fun tool for quizzers into a fun tool for learners. I would need your assistance with the topic material, but I’d like the code base of the tool to be available to anyone who thinks they can spread fun with it.

Will the game last?

It will. Will it ‘blow up’ viral? No. Probably not. If you’d like to get all your friends into it to prove me wrong, I’d be very grateful. Ultimately, the core of it is that if anyone’s playing it at all, I’ll be keeping it running, and the more people who play it, the more I can justify time or financial investment into making the project bigger and better.

I’ve written over 1000 quiz questions as part of running my University Quiz Society, and made it onto our (unsuccessful) University Challenge Team in 2025. Accordingly, you may be assured that I will not run out of questions or the desire to make and do quizzes.
